As always, the office smelled like a mixture of clorox and some fruity air freshener plug in. Needless to say, this scent cocktail didn't really sit well with Ash's stomach. On the inside he was contemplating dashing to the bathroom to vomit or just get away from this stench, but on the outside he looked cooly collected and perfectly at ease, as per usual. He was practically lounging in the cushioned seat outside the door to the Nurse's Office. Sure she hadn't been expecting him for a good while, and therefore she was still on her break, but at least this way he got to relax for a little while. While the smell wasn't nice, the silence here was peaceful. Nothing but the clicking of keys from where the secretary was around a corner. The steady tapping, combined with the soft sound of pouring water from the cheap little fountain she had on her desk, was probably some sort of therapeutic. So Ashton was perfectly happy to sit here and wait for the Nurse to come back. Whenever that might be.

you're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me, well sentence me to another life. "Right around the corner, Miss Black, your counselor will be with you shortly." Nodding once in acknowledgment and an almost inaudible word of thanks, Audrey moved past the busy woman and made her way to sit around the small oval table outside the nurse's office. Apparently, the good lot of them were in a staff meeting right now, not that it really bothered her considering it was around lunch, and the idea of her eating was barely a thought in her mind these days. It wasn't as if anyone cared or noticed (maybe Mara, maybe) but other than that it was no one's business. She had ignored the looks either of her brothers might've given her from time to time if she was making dinner for them but decided not to eat it, or to eat but insist on going to the bathroom to shower almost immediately afterwards. But of course, it was no one's business. Audrey had barely turned the corner before a familiar scent reached her, and the knots in her stomach tightened as brown eyes fell upon Ashton, and she dropped her gaze just as quickly, sitting only a mere few feet away from him. She looked away from him pointedly, making it a note to check her phone and send a few texts, in desperate hope someone would reply and distract her from the only other occupant in the room. A soft murmur of words and a brief break in the stream of clicking roused Ashton from his pseudo stupor. Blinking once he turned his gaze to the corner, running through a list of people who could turn it and working out different ways to deal with this scenario. After all, he couldn't have anyone find out. He didn't need anyones pity, and given his status it would probably spread through the school like wildfire. Of course, he could use it to his advantage, but why would he want to? It would be.. well, it just wasn't his style. Private matters were private for a reason thank you. Although of all the possibilities he had been working on had never even got close to being Audrey Black. The moment his eyes fell on her he practically froze, his face turning instantly into stone as he watched her move to take her seat. And while she looked anywhere but at him, he downright stared at her. She definitely looked skinnier, much skinnier than he had last seen her. Eyes narrowing slightly he turned his gaze over to the window on the wall, letting silence settle for a few moments, the beeps coming from Audrey's phone as she texted grating on his nerves as if someone was sanding them. His teeth clicked together audibly as stared out at the rain outside, drumming his fingers on the arm rest before his gaze flicked back to Audrey. Use any opportunity that presents it to you. Never hesitate to turn a situation into one you can use. "You've lost weight, Audrey." His voice had lost all the sugar he put on for everyone else. Without it his voice was cold, too cold. "Seeing the end of your little reign getting to you?" [/blockquote]

you're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me, well sentence me to another life. She felt his eyes on her. Analyzing, calculating, judging, misjudging, whatever is that he was good at now. So different from the boy she had regularly cooked meals for at random intervals, so outside the best friend she had once shared thoughts with, never too deep because Audrey Joy Black didn't share anything too personal with anyone, but enough that it would be recognized as a feat of accomplishment to get past the school queen bee's icy exterior. She had assumed, no, knew that this was all her fault, that she had lead him on somehow and blurred the lines of friendship for him, broken his heart and now he was getting his revenge. Steadily getting there, too, Ashton Cooper becoming a name itself, not enough to overthrow her, but enough to get her worried. Except she didn't worry, not too much. She hardly paid attention, in fact; there were other... issues, to focus herself to than the hierarchy of high school she owned, loved, and loathed simultaneously. Audrey heard him speak, and she stiffened. Eyes on her phone, she kept her tone indifferent; not cold, not warm, neutral and collected. "Have you?" she inquired, as if he had just announced he cut the grass that morning, though his harsh words caused a twinge of hurt inside, "That's something, I guess. And not really."[/blockquote]

One eyebrow raised at Aud's odd response, although he finally took his gaze off of her and closed her eyes instead, resting his head against the wall as he watched the backs of his eyelids. "Yes, you have." His tone was still cold, still detached, although it wasn't in the least bit bitter, oddly enough. "That so? Well then, you wouldn't be willing to stop being the bitch queen and just step down would you? Fade back into the gray of anonymity and stop ruining peoples lives?" Ashton didn't even bother to open his eyes. He already knew that answer. No matter how distracted she got by her other issues, in the end, there was one thing that held constant with Audrey Black: Vanity. Perhaps control and the disturbing little kick she got out of hurting people factored into it, but how else could you explain her starving herself? Her desire, no, need to be the center of attention, that was rooted in vanity too. Ashton opened one eye to look her up and down, then scoffed, a little snicker even escaping him. And he'd fancied himself in love with that thing. Hah. She was nothing special, just a bunch of superficial spite with weak self-esteem to back it up. Pathetic. Nothing like Sarah. Wait.. what? [/blockquote]

you're not a judge but if you're gonna judge me, well sentence me to another life. She followed his tone, the edge, the calm that seemed to lash more than any visibly angered word would ever manage. So he had noticed. Audrey wasn't surprised: she had definitely caught the way his eyes used to scan, not criticize, but take into account if she looked thinner one week compared to the other, back then. But back then, they had also spoken to each other with the air of comraderie, not this... this silence that seemed to chip away at her demeanor bit by bit. Of course he'd know how to deconstruct her, he knew her on a level many hadn't, and had gauged it something to destroy instead of aid, or even give indifference to. In another world, there would be a sense of pride among the animosity; in another world, Aud would actively participate in said animosity. But she couldn't. It wasn't possible. Not when she turned her head and she could remember how instead of the contact lenses, his glasses used to fall to the bridge of his nose, or how his lanky form used to issue an endearing awkwardness, instead of cool grace. The truth of the matter was, Ashton Cooper really needn't have gone out of his way to get under her skin: all he had to do was look at her, and recall forth the memory of a lost friend. She paused to reconsider her answer, then flipped her phone shut and smiled at him wryly, almost wistfully, as if he couldn't understand.
"You're asking a drug addict to give up the finest poison, Ash." [/blockquote]
