Serge never knew he had a kid of his own, and he wasn't aware that his high school sweetheart Julie never recovered from breaking up with him. This kid grew up listening about the famed Serge Cohen, how he had swept their mother off her feet. How could he, though, move to Italy and never come back? Even if he didn't know, wasn't the woman he had loved in high school worth coming back for? Julie died of unknown causes when their child was only fourteen years old, and has since then brought up themselves, for the most part anyway.
At the Forks and La Push trip to Italy, Serge runs into a girl that for some reason or another entrances him. She's too young, he tells himself. Besides, he has his clan, anyone else too attached would only be a target for the Volturi. Somehow, she seems a bit beyond her years, for a reason he doesn't understand right away. He just can't force himself to shake her off, she's too interesting to talk to. It's the day before the plane is to board back home, and she eventually has to rush off after her chance meeting with the vampire. Serge, not ready to let her go just yet, asks where she's from. The answer brings back memories of youth, of living, of being human. Home.
He braces himself, and soon thereafter takes a flight back to the US, residing in the abandoned home he grew up in. Bumping into another kid while looking for the girl he met, Serge brushes them off, apologizes, and is about to walk away. Something about the foreigner strikes something in the kid - whether it be maybe they share the same eyes, same nose, or just look somewhat similar. They stop him, and ask him a couple questions about who he is. Bemused, Serge answers them; Kids are so curious these days.
It becomes set in their head as they let Serge walk away, off in pursuit for the girl he met in Volterra. The Serge that their mom talked about, that was him. The boy from Italy... and yet, he looked the same as he had in the pictures taken while he was in Forks all those years ago, maybe two or three years older though. They eventually tell Serge, and through a bit of convincing, he's sold. Although he's saddened by the death of Julie, his kid sees him out and about with the girl he met in Italy. This brings only a flood of emotions, both good and bad.
To make matters worse, Serge realizes a few of the Volturi are surrounding Forks and La Push, and immediately calls the rest/some of his clan to ensure the others' safety. He had heard of the vampires and werewolves clashing in this area, but he's thoroughly convinced the only main thing they'd have to worry about are the Volturi. So much that he doesn't even notice someone very dangerous sneaking under the radar. But someone - a longtime enemy of Serge - has found out of his attachment to this teenager. They soon realize it's his offspring of all things, and meets Serge to give him a choice.
Go along with whatever they want, or the kid dies.
Or, perhaps, turns them; Serge hates the idea of being a vampire himself, the thought of his own son/daughter being one makes him sick to his stomach. This Volturi member knows this, and tells him to decide quickly.
The one member of the Volturi that Serge has always been semi-friendly to (a secret friendship of sorts), is warning him very clearly: this person is ruthless, even more so because it's Serge. They're not sure whether or not to get involved as a Volturi member, since it may or may not be involving a human child.
While meeting with his clan, and his own love interest simultaneously (she's somehow convinced she can help him), a note is pinned to the door of his home.
"The child is gone. Be in wilderness by twilight."
The Volturi can be damned as far as Serge cares; he just wants his kid back.

Serge's kid is kind of just their own person - hence why I was kind of vague about who they are. They don't have to have Serge's surname, actually. It's basically another character entirely. =P
